How to Access and Manage Remote Desktops in AWS

How to Access and Manage Remote Desktops in AWS

Overview

Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides multiple ways to deploy and access remote desktops depending on your environment setup.
The three most common methods are Amazon WorkSpaces, EC2 Windows Instances, and Amazon AppStream 2.0.

Each option has a different management console within AWS. The following sections explain how to locate and manage each one after logging in to the AWS Management Console.

Accessing Amazon WorkSpaces

Amazon WorkSpaces is AWS’s managed virtual desktop service, designed for users who need a persistent cloud-based Windows or Linux desktop.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Log in to the AWS Management Console at https://console.aws.amazon.com.

2. In the search bar at the top of the page, type WorkSpaces.

3. Click WorkSpaces from the search results (listed under End User Computing).

4. You will now be in the Amazon WorkSpaces console, where you can:

View existing WorkSpaces

Launch new WorkSpaces

Manage users and directories

Monitor connection health and status

This section is the main area for managing all AWS WorkSpaces in your environment.

Accessing EC2 Windows Instances (Manual Remote Desktops)

If your remote desktops are simply Windows EC2 instances configured for RDP access, you can manage them through the EC2 console.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Log in to the AWS Management Console.

2. In the search bar, type EC2 and click EC2 from the list.

3. In the left-hand navigation pane, select Instances Instances (running).

4. You will see a list of your running Windows instances.

5. Select the instance you want to connect to, then click the Connect button at the top of the screen.

6. Choose the RDP Client tab to view connection details.

The console will show your instance’s public IP address or DNS name.

You can also download the RDP file directly for quick access.

Use these connection details to open Remote Desktop on your local computer and connect securely.

Accessing Amazon AppStream 2.0

Amazon AppStream 2.0 allows organizations to stream desktop applications or full virtual desktops from AWS to users.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Log in to the AWS Management Console.

2. In the search bar, type AppStream 2.0.

3. Click AppStream 2.0 under the End User Computing category.

4. In the AppStream 2.0 console, you can:

View and manage streaming fleets and stacks

Assign users and permissions

Launch applications or virtual desktops for end users

AppStream 2.0 is ideal for environments that need controlled application streaming instead of persistent desktops.

Summary

To access and manage remote desktops within AWS:

Use WorkSpaces for managed, persistent cloud desktops.

Use EC2 for manual remote desktop setups via Windows RDP.

Use AppStream 2.0 for streaming specific desktops or applications.

Each service can be found through the AWS Management Console search bar, making it easy to locate and manage from a single login.
