Move Saved Passwords - Chrome, Safari, and Firefox

Overview

This guide shows two ways to move saved passwords between computers for Chrome, Safari, and Firefox.

- Method 1 - Export and Import using a CSV file.


- Method 2 - Sign in and Sync from the source, then sign in on the destination and enable sync.



Security Reminder

- Exported CSV files are plaintext. Anyone who gets the file can read your logins.


- Delete the CSV immediately after you confirm the import.


- If you transfer by USB or cloud storage, place the CSV inside an encrypted ZIP with a strong password.

Google Chrome - Export and Import Passwords

1. On the source computer open Chrome and go to chrome://settings/passwords.

2. Under Saved Passwords, click the three-dot menu and choose Export passwords.

3. Confirm with your computer login password and save the CSV to a secure location.

4. On the destination computer, open Chrome and go to chrome://settings/passwords.

5. Click the three-dot menu and choose Import, then select the CSV you exported.

6. Verify logins are present, then securely delete the CSV.

Google Chrome - Sync Passwords

1. On the source computer sign in to Chrome with your Google account.

2. Go to Settings and turn on Sync. Ensure Passwords is enabled.

3. On the destination computer sign in with the same Google account.

4. Turn on Sync and ensure Passwords is enabled.

5. Chrome will sync saved passwords automatically.

Apple Safari - Export and Import Passwords

1. On the source Mac open Safari, then go to Safari > Settings > Passwords.

2. Authenticate, then click the three-dot menu and choose Export Passwords. Save the CSV.

3. On the destination Mac open Safari > Settings > Passwords.

4. Click the three-dot menu and choose Import Passwords, then select the CSV.

5. Verify entries imported correctly, then securely delete the CSV.

Apple Safari - Sync with iCloud Keychain

1. On the source Mac open System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud. Turn on Passwords and Keychain.

2. On the destination Mac sign in with the same Apple ID and enable Passwords and Keychain.

3. Allow time for iCloud to sync logins to the destination Mac.

4. Optional - enable iCloud Keychain on iPhone or iPad to sync logins to mobile devices.

Mozilla Firefox - Export and Import Passwords

1. On the source computer open Firefox and go to about:logins.

2. Click the three-dot menu and choose Export Logins. Save the CSV.

3. On the destination computer go to about:logins and choose Import from a file.

4. Select the CSV you exported. If Import from a file is not visible, update Firefox or enable it in about:config.

5. Verify logins imported, then securely delete the CSV.

Mozilla Firefox - Sync Passwords

1. On the source computer sign in to your Firefox Account. Open Settings > Sync and enable Logins and Passwords.

2. On the destination computer sign in to the same account and enable Logins and Passwords.

3. Firefox will synchronize saved passwords automatically.


Post-Transfer Checklist

- Sign out of any accounts you used for sync on shared or temporary computers.


- Run each browsers password check or security checkup to find compromised or weak passwords.


- Rotate critical credentials where appropriate.
